Heavy Rubber is a fantastic film. I hope everyone will have the chance to see it . . . the entire family,  not just musicians. I believe the world can be be a better place if we would all use our imaginations more. It’s time. There are so many wonderful possibilities. Jon Damian shows us how in this inspiring film.

-Bill Frisell

“Having played the standard guitar for years as an improviser, I wanted to explore another instrumental medium. So I invented the Rubbertellie. It is a totally standard guitar, with absolutely no additives, but approached in a totally non-standard way. It is held and played differently, tuned quite differently, hence the conceptual prefix “rubber” to indicate that it has stretched the traditional boundaries of the instrument.”

Yo Records
Recorded at: the Berklee Performance Center, Boston, MA.
Released: 1997

Dedications: Faces and Places, my first recording as a leader, is a potpourri of compositions I have written for special people and places in my life. The bands consist of a quintet along with Bill Frisell, a quintet using two double basses, some trio work, and solo pieces for guitar and Rubbertellie.”

“In 1975 I had the good fortune to meet Jon Damian. He is one of the few musicians I know who has found his own unique voice and the courage to stay true to it. He has a deep understanding of the history and at the same time is always looking ahead using his fantastic imagination. As a student of his, Jon gave me the confidence to go after my own ideas and also showed me whole new ways of looking at music. He continues to be an inspiration and example.”
